Suncast RSB100D 100-Foot Water Powered Automatic Rewinding Garden Hose Reel Review

In previous two years we have purchased 4 Reel-Smart hose reel units (dist by mfgr Hydro Industries) and now this No-Crank unit (still mfgd by Hydro, but distributed under the Suncast label). The rewind mechanism is ingenious, with its water-pressure powered 3-piston hydraulic pump. The unit works well, but I underscore these requirements, lest you think the unit is malfunctioning and head back to the store with it. First, READ THE BROCHURE that comes with the unit and strictly comply with Hydro's recommendations: Use not heavier than medium duty, vinyl or plastic (NOT rubber) 5/8" hose; Do NOT exceed hose length or width specified for your unit; Prior to pulling hose out of the No-Crank, make sure rewind control handle is in REST position, and hose is NOT pressurized; Prior to rewinding, turn water supply OFF and open hose nozzle; Straighten out the hose to be rewound, then pick up nozzle end and set it down near the No-Crank to reduce hose drag force; Move the rewind control to REWIND, then turn on water supply to activate rewind mechanism. As the nozzle gets within a couple feet of fully retracted, turn off water supply, and reset rewind control to REST. You'll be impressed with how this little regimen enables your No-Crank to work like a champ for the long haul. NOTE: An annual light spray of silicone over the length of the hose will help help No-Crank's rewind mechanism distribute the hose neatly over the storage reel.

They can sit on top of the box when you reel/unreel the hose. Otherwise, there are anchor points on the housing if you want to secure it to the ground. Like others, the coupling leaked when I connected my 75' garden hose to spindle the first time...On the second attempt,I used teflon tape on the coupling and screwed it very tightly and no leaks! The crank is low to the ground, so you may need to kneel in order to to reel the hose in.I sympathize with all the reviewers here, it may be easier to buy a heavy duty version. However, if you are on a budget (and got kids) you can get this at your local home depot for twenty greenbacks.It is made in the USA.

We have had several hose trucks/hose reels over the years.We like this one better than most.The connection point where the garden hose connects to the reel is one of the best I have seen.It allows for smooth curling of the hose around the reel without kinking or bending the hose.There are two things I would do differently if I designed the truck.The front of the hose truck has "U" shaped metal tubing that rests on the surface to help stableize the unit.This is not a good design because it allows contact with the surface which will wear the paint off the metal and cause the metal to rust.Ruber bumpers would help with that problem.The wheels are mounted using nuts and bolts through some thin metal tubing.If the cart is moved much at all this will be a weak spot.Thicker tubing and a solid rod from one wheel to the other would solve the problem.

Ames True Temper 2388100 65-Foot Cassette Hose King Reel Review

I say that but there may be big ol' wheely cart like things out there that are better and hold lots more hose,but for those of you who don't want a giant piece of funky looking stuff to store or haul around but rather a reliable convenient hose real that doesn't stick out and look cheap and ugly butworks,....then this would be the one.And BELIEVE ME I have tried lots of hose reels!
I loath most of them and especially the way they trash up a yard.I got an extra 25 ft of hose in case I needed more length.It only holds so much and we find we are using the 25 extra ft on occasion as well. (we have a long driveway)
25 ft of hose is easy to mess with and can just sit by the faucet coiled up neatly.
The only improvement I could see them using on this would be to put a little weight on the bottom of it because if the ground is not completely level it falls over sometimes when one is pulling the hose out.Not a biggy,...still works.
It's SO easy just to pick it up and take it from our back yard to the front yard.
I will bring it in in the winter and it will be very easy to store because it takes up very little space.
This is the only hose reel I've ever had that doesn't make me feel like ripping my hair out!Always works smoothly.
UPDATE MARCH 26, 2009: I'm here to give this two thumbs up for durability!All the rest of the reels I've had have fallen apart by now or quit working smoothly.This one is still working like new.I really like it- it isn't nearly as cumbersome to use as the rest of the competition!!

While the hose reel looks nice, the included feeder hose leaked at the metal fitting (not the washer), which I had to replace.The reel leaked at the plastic part where the main hose attaches to the reel (the O-rings needed replacement).And worst of all, the plastic hose connection for attachment of the main hose to the reel was so poorly made it looked essentially stripped.Using extreme care I managed to attach the hose successfully.So...you take your chances with this product.
